Since there seems to be a lot of Health / HIV workers on this site and since I'm supposed to be working...
Does anyone have any advice on doing HIV prevention outreach with MSMs (Men who have Sex with Men) in rural communities?
We are starting a cyber outreach program, but as far as street outreach goes.. All I can think of is condom distribution and testing referalls.
Honestly, even if you don't work in health related or HIV related fields I'd appreciate any thoughts anyone might have for encouraging MSMs to practice safer sex and to get tested.

Re: Outreach with MSMs?
Thu, December 13, 2007 - 11:03 AMI have lived in rural areas and free public condom/lube/dental dam distribution works as does setting up a free testing site/center or even a place where people can go to learn about HIV and other STDs or get free condoms/dental dams/packets of lube, and not get judged or made to feel weird.
Also if you do set up a center or a testing site (when I lived in a rural area they'd have testing sites open for a few days out of a year), put up fliers everywhere for it! The website is also a good idea too. -

Re: Outreach with MSMs?
Thu, December 13, 2007 - 2:05 PMThank you for your responce. These are actually a few of the things we have been doing, working with our county public health and their testing van, doing a lot of street outreach.
I totally support your statement about not making people feel weird or judged. Sex is a beautiful thing, people just need to protect themselves.
Oh we actually just started doing online outreach and OMG it is turning out to be a great success! -

ONe of the places I test at , we also do the hep test, were people poke there finger and put their blood on this card , and it gets sent off. They can call for there desults I think after I think a week or two. Can't remmber the time off the top of my head. I have only done one.
What about needle exchanges in your area? -

Re: Outreach with MSMs?
Wed, January 2, 2008 - 5:45 PMWe don't offer HEP C testing at our agency, although we do have services for people who are Hepatitis C positive. We work really closely with our County Public Health and typically refer peole there for testing and for syringe exchange.
